Sri Lanka tour guides are trained and certified by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). Those who are trained to conduct tours throughout the country are called National Tour Guides, while guides based at specific tourist attractions are known as On-Site Guides.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) is the sole authority authorized to issue the National Tour Guide License. Licenses are awarded to successful participants following a full-time intensive training course covering geography, history, archaeology, culture, nature, wildlife, and Buddhism in Sri Lanka, along with examinations.

Certified Sri Lanka tour guides are well trained by the SLTDA to provide assistance, information, and cultural, historical, and contemporary heritage interpretation to foreign tourists visiting Sri Lanka. Certified Sri Lanka chauffeur guides are competent to handle organized tours, individual clients, and educational groups at religious, archaeological, and historical sites, museums, and other places of interest.
